Former Gov. Jim Douglas has endorsed Joe Benning for lieutenant governor, Benning’s campaign announced on Monday.
Benning, a Republican state senator representing Caledonia County, is competing against former Rutland City Alderman Gregory Thayer in the Republican primary for the state’s No. 2 post.
In a press release Tuesday, Douglas, a fellow Republican, said Benning “has the experience needed to be a great Lieutenant Governor.”
“He’s been a Senate leader, he works hard, he loves Vermont, and he’s respected by his colleagues across the political spectrum,” Douglas said.
Earlier in May, Douglas was named campaign chair for former U.S. Attorney Christina Nolan, who is running as a Republican for Vermont’s open U.S. Senate seat.
Douglas served as governor from 2003 to 2011 and previously held positions as state representative, secretary of state and state treasurer.
