About 80 people gathered under brooding skies at the Five Corners intersection in Essex Junction on Saturday to rally, hold signs and wave to passing traffic in an effort to call for the safety of the transgender community in the wake of the killing this week of Fern Feather, a transgender woman from Hinesburg.

The mood was somber, lifted by the supportive honks and waves of passing motorists. People attending the event held signs reading โ€œSupport Trans Rightsโ€ and โ€œTrans Rights Matterโ€ while flying the pink, white and blue trans pride flag and the rainbow gay pride rainbow flag.

A number of other events have been scheduled, including a separate vigil in Morrisville on Saturday and a public event commemorating what would be Featherโ€™s 30th birthday slated for Friday, April 22, at Orlandoโ€™s in Burlington.
