Vermont reported 111 new Covid-19 cases and three new deaths on Tuesday.
Hospitalizations continue to reach recent highs, according to data from the Vermont Department of Health. As of Tuesday, 43 people were hospitalized for Covid, with nine in intensive care. One more person was hospitalized with a suspected case.
That’s the highest daily count of hospitalizations during the current surge for the second day in a row.
Of those 43 people, 36 were unvaccinated and seven were fully vaccinated, Gov. Phil Scott said during Tuesday’s Covid-19 press conference.
One new death was reported in the 50-59 age group, and two were reported in the 80+ age group. Thirteen people have died from the virus so far in September, according to the Department of Health, and 291 have died throughout the pandemic.
The seven-day average test positivity rate was 3.5%.
The health department also published new weekly data on cases in schools and long-term care facilities.
The state reported 78 new cases across 50 schools this week, with 159 total cases reported for the school year so far.
This week’s total is a decrease from 81 cases reported last Tuesday. However, the previous report tracked cases over a longer reporting period — roughly eight school days versus four in the latest report.
The state’s weekly school data is not comprehensive. The department only reports school cases when the Covid-positive individual was physically present in a school building, at a school-related event or on the bus while infectious.

As of Monday, 134 people were associated with outbreaks in seven long-term care facilities, up from at least 101 cases in seven facilities last week. (The exact count was not available last week because data for two facilities with fewer than six cases was withheld.)
While most of those facilities showed fewer than three new cases, one outbreak — at Vernon Hall Assisted Living in Vernon — expanded to 11 cases from fewer than six reported last week. A new outbreak of 12 cases at Green Mountain Nursing and Rehab in Colchester was reported, and a previous outbreak at Harbor Village in Burlington was removed from the list.
From Aug. 1 to Sept. 10, nine residents of Vermont long-term care facilities have died from Covid-19.
Both the school and long-term care facility data are released weekly on Tuesdays. The health department publishes more detailed data on age, race and vaccination status of new cases every two weeks. The most recent data summary was released on Friday.
The state’s vaccine dashboard, also updated Monday, shows 87% of eligible Vermonters have received at least one dose of the vaccine. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 68.7% of the state’s total population is fully vaccinated.
