A wedding in Plainfield linked to at least 67 Covid-19 infections has driven up the case rates of the town and its neighboring communities, according to Vermont Department of Health data.
The wedding, hosted on Aug. 21, has been linked to two sets of cases — those directly associated with the event and a secondary outbreak at a Plainfield day care center, according to a spokesperson for the health department.
Following the wedding, the number of cases in Plainfield rose 31% in two weeks. East Montpelier’s cases grew 27% and Marshfield’s grew 27% in the same time period.
Barre city, where the reception was held, has reported 54 new cases in the past two weeks, the second-highest total in the state after Burlington.
The high levels of community spread may have affected schools in Washington County as well. Twinfield Union School in Plainfield closed its elementary school grades after five cases were reported at the school, and East Montpelier Elementary sent students home for the week after two reported cases.
Other communities with high case rates included Waterbury, Danby, Windsor, Barton and Grand Isle, according to the health department map. Each had more than 80 cases per 10,000 people over the past two weeks.
