The sound of wood connecting with horsehide echoed off the bleachers of historic Centennial Field as the Vermont Lake Monsters brought baseball back to Burlington Saturday, May 29, after a yearlong pause because of the pandemic.

It was the home opener as part of the Futures Collegiate Baseball League for the former Major League Baseball-affiliated team.

The stands werenโ€™t completely full because of Covid restrictions but fans were still lined up to get into the ballpark when the gates opened. They were treated to the antics of Champ, the Lake Monstersโ€™ mascot, and enjoyed the American pastimeโ€™s staples of hot dogs and beer while the home team celebrated with a 6-3 win over the Norwich Sea Unicorns.
