On Thursday, VTDigger hosted a dynamic event about gender bias in the media with NYTimes bestselling author Rebecca Traister, moderated by VPR’s Jane Lindholm and featuring leading Vermont women in media. The event was organized in partnership with Vermont Has Her Back.

The panel discussion brought Traister into conversation with the experiences and perspectives of Anne Galloway (VTDigger), Sarah Ashworth (VPR), Eva McKend (Spectrum News), Candace Page (Seven Days) and co-author of Vermont Has Her Back, Natalie Silver.

More than 500 audience members joined the event and contributed questions live, enriching the event and leading panelists to delve into the subjects of journalistic objectivity, the intersectionality of race and gender, and their own personal experiences in the national and Vermont media landscapes. We’ve created a short list of readings that were mentioned during the evening’s event below.

The full event recording will be available above and on YouTube for the next 14 days.

VTDigger is able to host such events through member support. As storytellers charged with the responsibility of holding power to account, we want to continue stepping up to uncomfortable conversations and engaging with challenging subjects, because our community needs us to.

If you can, please support our spring membership drive today and help us keep asking the hard questions of ourselves, and others. We will send one book on your behalf to a Vermont kid through our partnership with the Children’s Literacy Foundation.
