Here at Digger, our reporters invest hours getting into the weeds and poring through datasets so that we can bring you the most complete story. Take our story on migration within Vermont.
Data reporter Erin Petenko investigated migration trends in Vermont, rendering a picture of the rural state’s population trends that is anything but simple.
Erin’s data analysis mapped out where people are going — which states new Vermonters are coming from and which ones current Vermonters are likely to move to. It also included visualizations so readers could see how the churn affects rural and urban regions of the state differently.
The upshot? From 2010 to 2018, 10,000 people left Vermont. But the nuances are more complicated than that.
We believe Vermonters deserve all the facts, not just the easy or simple ones. Sometimes the facts are messy, but a big part of our mission is to help explain it in a way that’s accessible to everyone.
If you support this mission, will you join as a VTDigger member today?

Also: Thanks to our digital editor, Mike Dougherty, you can listen along to Erin describe the findings of her investigation on the Deeper Dig Podcast.
