Dear Reader,

When it broke on Nov. 3, our investigative series โ€œWho Owns Burlingtonโ€ brought over 400 readers per second to VTDiggerโ€™s website — doubling our usual user rate.

The series hit a nerve. Readers responded because of a crying need for affordable housing in the city.

VTDigger’s in-depth analysis found that property ownership is concentrated in the hands of a few nonprofit institutions and private individuals in Burlington.

Aidan Quiqley, our Burlington-based reporter, worked on this project for months in addition to his regular daily and longer-term news stories. Data reporters Felippe Rodrigues, Christopher Rennel and Erin Petenko supported necessary, yet time-consuming, research and reporting.

Our reporters threw themselves into the grunt work of combing through the Burlington grand list and property database, and cross referencing that information with a list of corporations on file with the Secretary of Stateโ€™s Office.

We canโ€™t invest in this type of rigorous news reporting without the support of readers like you.

We listen to what readers want us to report, and we work hard to bring you the important information you need.

Will you help us get you the facts?

For a limited time, every dollar donated to VTDigger up to $65,000 will be matched by the Knight Foundation, Democracy Fund, REI Co-op, and generous friends of VTDigger. New monthly contributions and one-time gifts of up to $1,000 count toward this match.

With gratitude,

Anne Galloway
