Up to 8 inches of snow could fall in the next few days as an early season wintry storm is expected to hit Vermont and the northeast.

A winter storm watch has been issued in northern Vermont beginning Monday afternoon and extending into Tuesday, according to an alert from the state Department of Public Safety.

The watch region includes Franklin, Grand Isle, Orleans, Essex, Chittenden, Lamoille, Washington, Caledonia and Addison counties. The Adirondacks and parts of northeastern New York are also included in the advisory.

A weather advisory cautions that โ€œtravel could be very difficult.โ€

Officials say a โ€œnarrow bandโ€ of snow could develop through the region Monday and Tuesday. Snow accumulation could total between 5 and 8 inches, though could be higher in some local areas, according to the advisory.

Snowfall is expected to start at noon Monday and continue through the night, complicating Tuesday morning commutes.
