An arrest warrant has been issued for a woman involved in a head-on collision in Lyndon Monday that killed a 3-year-old boy and left his mother in critical condition.

The child, Dean Spicer, died at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in New Hampshire, state police said Friday.

Dean was a passenger in a car driven by Sandra Leach — his mother, according to a GoFundMe page started by family. Troopers said Friday she remained in critical condition at the same hospital.

Department of Corrections Commissioner Mike Touchette said Friday an arrest warrant had been issued for Melinda Mitchell, 28, of Lyndon, who was driving the car that police say crashed into Leach’s vehicle. Touchette said the warrant was related to the car crash.

Vermont State Police have not provided details of possible charges against Mitchell.

The incident happened just before 11 a.m. Monday on U.S. Route 5 in Lyndon, close to the St. Johnsbury town line.

Leach, 41, from Lyndon, was driving a 2006 Chevy Malibu south. In the opposite lane, Mitchell was driving a 2003 Volkswagen Passat.

Then, state police said, Mitchell crossed the yellow road lines into oncoming traffic and crashed into Leach head on.

The impact totaled both cars, troopers said.

Mitchell was taken to Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital with a lower leg injury. State police on Friday provided no updates on Mitchell’s condition.

The Caledonian Record reported Friday morning that Mitchell had been driving without a valid driver’s license during the incident.

Leach was wearing a seat belt, and the child was secured in a car seat, state police said.

Mitchell was not wearing a seat belt, troopers said.
