Federal grand jury indicts Jay Peak developers
A federal grand jury has brought criminal charges against former Jay Peak developers Bill Stenger and Ariel Quiros in a 14-count indictment. Federal prosecutors allege Quiros, Stenger and two other partners committed criminal fraud in the AnC Bio Vermont project, a proposed biomedical facility in Newport that was never built. The criminal charges come more than three years after federal and state regulators brought civil charges against the men, alleging that they ran a Ponzi-like scheme with the Northeast Kingdom projects.
Senate supports $12.50 minimum wage by 2021, after nixing House’s plan
As the legislative session continues in overtime, the Senate has passed a new compromise on the minimum wage. Their latest proposal increases the minimum wage to $12.50 an hour by 2021. They argue this would raise pay for low-income workers faster than the most recent House plan.
Scott will let abortion legislation become law, spokesperson says
A bill that protects reproductive rights in Vermont will become law. Gov. Phil Scott’s spokesperson said he will not veto the bill, which offers some of the broadest protections of abortion rights in the nation.
