[D]ear Readers,

VTDigger has brought scrutiny to bear on the stalled CityPlace development in Burlington. Our reporter Aidan Quigley has written detailed reports about why an entire block of prime downtown Burlington real estate has sat empty for nearly a year.

Aidan has closely followed the delays of the construction of CityPlace, and the developers’ lofty promises and uncertain financing for the $220 million project. In pursuit of answers, he has sought public records to help you understand why the development is two years behind schedule. Residents compare CityPlace — the largest development in the state — with the “hole in the ground” in Newport.

The city of Burlington is now making back up plans for CityPlace in the event the developers don’t get financing for the project.

We know you care about how the city of Burlington is handling this major economic issue. VTDigger is on the beat, making sure you have the information you need to understand what is really going on behind the scenes.

We do this work because we believe in the power of news to bring people together. As one member wrote this week, an informed community is an engaged community.
