[T]he Vermont State Police have identified the remains of two people who were found at two homes in Woodbury that were both damaged by fire on Tuesday.

Police say David Thompson, 48, was killed by multiple gunshot wounds. His body was found at 637 Bliss Road. Thompson’s two dogs were also shot, police say.

Carol Fradette, 29, was found in the house next door, at 715 Bliss Road, according to police. The cause of her death is pending.

A resident of Bliss Road called police at 11:10 p.m. Tuesday to report a fire at one home, said Vermont State Police Capt. Dan Trudeau. Trudeau said that while firefighters were putting out a fire at 715 Bliss Road, they saw smoke coming from a home next door at 637 Bliss Road, about 150 feet away.

When the Woodbury Fire Department arrived, the second floor of the house at 715 Bliss Road was in flames, said Paul Cerutti, the Woodbury fire chief.

“While we were extinguishing that blaze, I noticed that there was smoke coming from the neighboring house and we ended up having to put that fire out too,” Cerutti said.

The Vermont State Police investigated the deaths with the Fire and Explosions Investigation Unit, the Major Crime Unit, and the Bureau of Criminal Investigation.

“Two houses that are 150 feet apart are both on fire with bodies in them, I would consider suspicious,” said Trudeau.

Thompson had rented 637 Bliss Road. Both homes were owned by the same person, a man who talked to police for their investigation.

Fradette, a graduate of Hazen Union School, was convicted of embezzlement and petit larceny in 2016 for manipulating lottery winnings and was ordered to serve 60 days in jail.
