[L]yndon Institute went into lockdown on its first day of classes Tuesday as police investigated a suspicious person report describing someone carrying a “long gun,” which turned out to be a student carrying an umbrella.

Lyndonville Police Chief Jack Harris said the department received the report of a “male subject walking on College Rd. toward Lyndon Institute carrying what was described as a long gun” from a member of the community who lives in the area around the high school.

Police said that as officers were en route to the area, they contacted the school and it initiated lockdown protocol.

At 11:50 a.m., the Lyndon Institute [tweeted] that the “campus is currently under lockdown. We will post updates here as they become available. We encourage parents/guardians NOT to come to the campus at this time.”

State troopers and members of the Caledonia County Sheriff’s Department assisted in the Lyndon Institute campus search.

After arriving at the high school, police said officers conducted a search of the school grounds and buildings, but found no firearms. They did find a student who matched the description given by the community member.

What had been described as a “long gun” was in fact an umbrella, police determined. The local resident remained with police to identify that the student and umbrella were the subject and item they had identified in their report.

At 12:24 p.m., Lyndon Institute tweeted that the lockdown had been lifted and classes restarted.
