[O]ne person is dead after a plane crash near a small airport in Island Pond on Saturday.

State and federal officials are working to confirm the identity of the plane’s sole occupant, and to identify the cause of the crash.

Police responded to a 911 call reporting a large fire near the runway at John H. Boylan Airport at about 3:45 p.m.

When emergency personnel responded, they discovered a single-engine plane that had been “badly burned” about 100 yards from the runway. The only occupant of the small aircraft was dead, according to Vermont State Police.

The body of the deceased individual has been transported to the Chief Medical Examiner’s Office.

Vermont State Police spokesperson Adam Silverman said an autopsy is expected to be performed Monday, which will help to confirm the identity of the individual and the cause of death. Silverman anticipates police will release the identity of the victim Monday.

Investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration arrived on the scene Sunday to determine what caused the plane to crash.

According to a statement from the FAA on Saturday, the pilot was the only person on board the Piper PA-22 plane when it crashed into the trees near the Island Pond airport runway.
