[W]ASHINGTON — Sen. Bernie Sanders will announce his plans for running for re-election Monday.
The Vermont independent confirmed to VTDigger that he would be addressing his plans for his future in the Senate that day.
“We’ll have more to say about that,” Sanders said in a brief interview Thursday in the basement of the Capitol.
Earlier Thursday, Vermont Public Radio reported that Sanders said he does not expect his announcement “will be a great surprise to anybody in the state of Vermont.”
“I am very proud to have represented Vermont for two terms in the U.S. Senate,” he told VPR. “I think we’ve accomplished a lot. Obviously there’s a lot more that has to be done, and we look forward to doing it.”
Sanders second Senate term is up this year. He previously served 16 years in the U.S. House.
According to Secretary of State records, one Republican candidate, Jasdeep Pannu, is registered for the U.S. Senate race in Vermont this year. Others have indicated plans to run.
Sanders enjoys a high level of support in the state. A Morning Consult poll last month found that 72 percent of voters in Vermont approve of his work in office, giving him the highest approval rating of any senator.
