Jack LaPlant, 26, of St. Albans was shot by St. Albans Police Department officers on Monday evening.
LaPlant was carrying a rifle and gun shots had been reported in the city, according to a press release from the Vermont State Police. When police encountered him, there was an exchange of gunfire and LaPlant’s abdomen was grazed by a bullet.
He was sent to Northwestern Medical Center and was subsequently transferred to the UVM Medical Center where he was treated for the non-life threatening wound. When he was released, LaPlant was taken into custody by the Vermont State Police. He is being held without bail at the Northwestern State Correctional Center and will be arraigned today in Franklin County Superior Court.
LaPlant had violated an abuse from prevention order that had been served on him Jan. 1 and court ordered conditions of release, police said in a statement.
The incident is under investigation by the Vermont State Police Major Crime Unit. Officers interviewed residents in the area where the shooting occurred. Bullet shell casings were recovered from the scene.
Police have released the names of the two officers that discharged firearms during the shooting: Michael Malinowski, 28, a corporal with the St. Albans police since November 2012, and Corporal Jason Lawton, 29, who has been employed at St. Albans PD since September 2014. Lawton was previously employed at Shelburne Police Department from March 2011 to September 2014.
The Vermont State Police Major Crime Unit has not made any other details available. Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact the unit.
