[B]URLINGTON — Gunshots struck an Old North End apartment where a mother and child were sleeping early Thursday, but nobody was injured, according to police.

Police received multiple reports of gunfire around 3:30 a.m. Officers identified an apartment at 700 Riverside Ave. that was struck numerous times, according to a news release.

Inside, police found the mother and child asleep and unharmed.

Detectives investigating are pursuing leads, according to the release. Police ask anyone with information on the incident to contact Burlington Police Detective Tom Chenette at 802-540-2271 or tchenette@bpdvt.org.

In a similar incident in September 2016, a bullet passed into an Old North End apartment where a family with two young children was sitting down to dinner. No one was hurt, police said.

Police arrested a man on unrelated gun and drug charges after an investigation.

In that incident, police located the suspect based on a witness description of the car from which shots were fired. Officers who said they smelled marijuana coming from the car obtained a search warrant and reported finding 80 grams of crack cocaine and two handguns.

The man, Quincy Alexander, is awaiting trial in U.S. District Court. Most recently, his attorneys requested more time to file pretrial motions, and a judge gave them until Nov. 1.
