A state office building in St. Albans was evacuated Wednesday because of a bomb threat.
About 140 employees from several state agencies work out of the Federal Street location, according to Buildings and General Services Commissioner Chris Cole. Most of them work for the Agency of Human Services, he said.
Cole said the threat came in by fax around 8:30 a.m.
The message said explosives placed in the building would be detonated if an undisclosed amount of money wasn’t sent to a specified account, according to a news release from the St. Albans Police Department.
As a precaution, the building was evacuated and searched. No explosives were found, according to Cole. The building closed for the day.
The threat was determined to be “likely not credible,” according to the police announcement. Police say the threat seems to be part of a wave of false threats to several unrelated locations in other parts of the country.
The office building will reopen Thursday, according to Cole.
