John Neuhauser, the president of St. Michael’s College, has announced his retirement.
Neuhauser, who has served the college since 2007, will retire in June 2018, according to a memo he sent to faculty and students last week.
Mary-Kate McKenna, chair of the board, lauded Neuhauser for improving academic rigor at the college, “providing research opportunities for students in their field of study and creating initiatives that better ensure students’ readiness to enter the job market.”
“His tenure defines what it means to be an outstanding college president,” McKenna said.
The board of trustees also praised Neuhauser for his “steady hand” during the Great Recession. Neuhauser had a “firm understanding of the operations and financial side of running a college,” according to trustee Joseph Garrity.
Under Neuhauser’s tenure, St. Michael’s opened the Pomerleau Alumni Center, a new residence hall and the Dion Family Student Center and Quad Commons. A MakerSpace was established for the study of robotics.
Neuhauser founded the Green Mountain Higher Education Consortium with the presidents of Middlebury and Champlain College to develop ways to reduce administrative costs and improve services common to all three colleges.
St. Michael’s College, located in Colchester, is a liberal arts college founded in “the Catholic intellectual tradition.”
