The day after the election, a student intern found a campaign sign lawn spray painted with a swastika near the Hillel Center, a Jewish organization on campus.

Sophomore Isabelle Schechter who works as an intern at the center discovered the sign three doors down from Hillel.

It is unknown whether the sign was meant to be directed at the Jewish group. The sign has since been removed; UVM police did not comment.

โ€œ[The sign] made me feel terrified and nauseous,โ€ Schechter said. โ€œIt was like a punch in the stomach about this reality โ€ฆ that weโ€™re facing.โ€

โ€œFor Jewish students,โ€ Matt Vogel, executive director of Hillel said, โ€œno matter what the intent is, seeing a swastika holds a very deep and painful association with [the Holocaust]; a deeply tragic part of our history.โ€

Trump sign, swastika
UVM students found this sign three doors from the Hillel Center, a Jewish organization.

Sophomore Arielle Cheifetz said she was disturbed by discovery of the sign because of the swastikaโ€™s historical context.

โ€œThe part [about this] that is the most disturbing,โ€ Cheifetz said, โ€œis that this occurred on the anniversary of Kristallnacht, a night [in 1938] where almost 200 synagogues [in Germany, Austria and Czechoslovakia] were destroyed, over 8,000 Jewish shops were sacked and looted and tens of thousands of Jews were removed to concentration camps.โ€

Cheifetz said she has concerns over the implications of the swastika being found on a sign supporting President-elect Donald Trump, and that she believes minority groups are preparing for hateful speech or actions to be committed against them. This unease is echoed by other members of the community.

โ€œIโ€™m worried thereโ€™s going to be much more of this since the election went in favor of Trump,โ€ senior Connor Clark said. โ€œ [He is] someone who is openly hateful toward minority groups.โ€

The sign was brought to Hillel because students feel it is a place where they can feel comfortable and bring up these types of incidents, Vogel said.

โ€œIโ€™ve seen the importance of the Hillel Center as a space where students feel safe,โ€ Hillel Assistant Director Sharon Silverman said. โ€œI know people are getting what they need for nourishment, whether thatโ€™s a bagel, a conversation, a hug or an โ€˜I see you.โ€™โ€

Both Silverman and Vogel said students have been coming into the Hillel center for support following Trumpโ€™s election.

โ€œThis day hasnโ€™t compromised our values,โ€ Silverman said. โ€œWe are here for students more than ever, and thatโ€™s something thatโ€™s going to continue on as we go through some changes for all of us.
