Vermont State Police have placed Steven Bourgoin, 36, under arrest, and he is now in the custody of the Vermont Department of Corrections.

Bourgoin is a patient at UVM Medical Center after sustaining injuries in a series of accidents he caused when he drove the wrong way on I-89. Police say an arraignment will be “forthcoming.”

At 11:45 p.m. Saturday, Bourgoin drove a Toyota Tacoma truck at a high speed in the wrong direction on I-89. He struck a 2004 VW Jetta, killing five teenagers from the Waterbury area. As an officer with the Williston Police Department attempted to extinguish the fire, Bourgoin stole the police cruiser, a Ford Explorer, and drove the wrong way again on the same stretch of highway.

In a press release on Tuesday evening, police said seven vehicles were damaged as a result of Bourgoin barreling at high speed up I-89 in the wrong direction. One car was damaged by debris, the remaining vehicles were struck by the cruiser.

Four people were injured in the accidents. Mary Ryan-Lambert, 29, suffered back and shoulder injuries. Michael Plunkett, 27, sustained chest impact injuries. Christopher Howland, 50, suffered an injury to his leg. Michael Vishnja, 27, injuries were not specified.
