A prisoner at Northwest State Correctional Facility was hospitalized Thursday after an apparent suicide attempt.

Staff at the prison in St. Albans Town performed CPR on a 25-year-old inmate, according to a statement from the Agency of Human Services. Emergency personnel took him to Northwestern Medical Center in St. Albans.

He was being treated at the University of Vermont Medical Center on Friday.

Officials did not provide information on the prisoner’s condition.

The Vermont State Police are investigating the incident. The defender general’s office, an AHS investigations unit and the Department of Corrections will review the situation as well.

The prisoner is serving time on several state charges, including retail theft, burglary, felony possession of stolen property and violations of conditions of release. He is also being held in a federal case.
