[W]INOOSKI โ€” Police shot and killed a manย late Friday afternoon in Winooski, according to Vermont State Police, who were called in to investigate.

Jesse Beshaw, 29, of Winooski, was shot by police, Vermont State Police Maj. Glenn Hall confirmed Saturday afternoon. Hall said in a statement that the investigation is ongoing and more information will be made public later Saturday.

The shooting happened behind Oโ€™Brienโ€™s Community Center on Malletts Bay Avenue about 4:30 p.m.ย Beshawย was pronounced dead at the scene.

โ€œThe identity of officers involved and their respective agencies is not being released at this time,โ€ state police said in a news release late Friday. Police had not released further information about the officers involved as of Saturday afternoon.

State police said they were called in about 4:55 p.m. Friday to investigate.

Bystanders who said they had witnessed the shooting told a VTDigger photographer that five or six shots were fired. They said the incident began after two teenagers or young men had gotten into a fight.

State police said their detectives were working closely with the Winooski Police Department and were in consultation with the Chittenden County stateโ€™s attorneyโ€™s office. Once the investigation is complete, the offices of the stateโ€™s attorney and the attorney general will conduct an independent review, as is customary for all-officer involved shootings, according to state police.

Anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has information is asked to contact the Vermont State Police Major Crime Unit.
