Burlington police say they responded to two drug overdose calls within 24 hours this week.

On Thursday afternoon, police went to a home on Archibald Street after receiving a report of an overdose there, according to the Burlington Police Department. Although police administered the overdose reversal drug naloxone, the 27-year-old man died at the scene. Police say they are investigating the incident.

Hours later, on Friday morning, authorities received a call about another overdose. Police and members of the Fire Department went to an address on North Winooski Avenue. The 28-year-old man in that case survived and was taken to the University of Vermont Medical Center.

Authorities didn’t publicly identify either person.

The two events prompted the Burlington Police Department to release a statement in which it reiterated the need to respond to opiate abuse.

“We once again voice the need for treatment on demand for all Vermonters struggling with opiate addiction,” a department news release stated.
