Vermonters who were laid off from the Bombardier Service Corp. in Colchester may be eligible for special assistance to help them find a new job.

The Vermont Department of Labor said Friday that the federal government has granted trade adjustment assistance to workers who were laid off on or after Oct. 22, 2014, or workers who are under a threat of layoff through May 24, 2018.

The department typically seeks the assistance when workers lose their jobs due to international trade, meaning their jobs were outsourced to another country.

The assistance includes re-employment services, job retraining, job search allowance, relocation allowance, unemployment insurance payments, trade readjustment allowances, and re-employment trade assistance wage subsidy, according to the Department of Labor.

The department will hold a special meeting at its office at 63 Pearl St. in Burlington from 1 to 3 p.m. Wednesday, where workers can learn what kind of assistance they can receive.

The department also encourages workers to call 802-828-4177 if they have questions about their benefits.
