Schools in Vergennes were on lockdown for about an hour Monday morning after a person with a weapon was reportedly seen near the high school.

The Vergennes Union High School and the elementary school initiated the security procedure after reports of that a person was seen holding a weapon near the schools shortly before 10 a.m., the Addison Northwest Supervisory Union stated on its Facebook page.

According to the statement, police found the individual in question and โ€œdetermined that they were carrying a pellet gun.โ€

โ€œWe followed our lock-down procedures and all of the students remained safe through this incident,โ€ the supervisory union stated via social media.

At 11 a.m., Vermont State Police dispatch confirmed to VTDigger that the schools were no longer on lockdown.
