President Barack Obama has approved Vermont’s request for federal disaster aid in the wake of a snow and ice storm in December.

The Dec. 9-12 storm caused about $4 million in damage in 10 Vermont counties, according to a news release from the governor’s office.

The president’s disaster declaration will allow towns and utilities affected by the storm to recover 75 percent of the cost of response and recovery. Those costs include debris removal and repairs to the power grid, public roads, bridges and other infrastructure that was damaged during the storm, according to the news release.

“I want to thank the President for approving this assistance for Vermont,” Gov. Peter Shumlin said in a statement. “This December storm was hard on tens of thousands of Vermonters, some of whom were in the dark for several days or more.”

The applications for reimbursement will be conducted through the Vermont Division of Emergency Management and Homeland Security, which will schedule briefings for applicants. The schedule of those briefings will be set soon, the news release said.
