The publisher of the Stowe Reporter and Waterbury Record is giving up his majority interest in the weekly newspaper publishing company.

Biddle Duke has owned and published the Stowe Reporter since 1998 and started the Waterbury Record nine years later.

Last spring, Duke sold 49 percent of the company to a group that publishes several weeklies in Southern California. That group, led by former Sports Illustrated publisher Robert L. Miller and former magazine publisher Norb Garrett, will assume a majority interest in the Reporter company. Duke will maintain a minority stake, he told Paul Heintz in Seven Days.

VTDigger will publish Duke’s farewell letter to readers on Sunday.
