The Vermont National Guard said Thursday that three of six F-16 fighter jets damaged in a powerful storm this month are back in service.

Two more are expected to be ready to return to service by the end of the day, the Guard said in a news release. The sixth jet was more severely damaged and is is awaiting parts, the Guard said.

A July 8 thunderstorm packing high winds caused a hangar door to collapse at the Burlington Air Guard Station, damaging six of the Guard’s F-16s.

“Three of the six damaged aircraft are repaired and are fully mission capable. We expect the fourth and fifth as early as close of business today. The sixth aircraft will take longer due to the extent of damage and parts availability. There is no estimated completion date at this time,” Maj. Chris Gookin, the Guard’s public affairs officer, said in a news release.

A structural evaluation of the damage to the hangar is expected to begin in one to two weeks, the Guard said.
