President Barack Obama is expected to nominate former CEO of Procter & Gamble Robert McDonald to serve as secretary of Veterans Affairs, The New York Times and others report.

McDonald will replace Eric Shinseki, who resigned following a scandal involving long wait times in the treatment of veterans at several VA hospitals.

Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., chair of the Senate Veteransโ€™ Affairs Committee, released the following statement Monday on McDonald’s appointment:

โ€œThe VA needs significantly improved transparency and accountability and it needs an increased number of doctors, nurses and other medical staff so that all eligible veterans get high-quality health care in a timely manner. I look forward to meeting with Mr. McDonald next week in order to ascertain his views on these important issues.โ€
