University of Vermont History Professor Harvey Amani Whitfield examines Vermont’s record on slavery in light of the often-cited claim that Vermont was the first state to prohibit slavery in its state Constitution. Whitfield, author of “The Problem of Slavery in Early Vermont, 1777-1810,” says the history is much more complicated. He spoke with WDEV’s Mark Johnson on Jan. 23rd. His book, published by the Vermont Historical Society, will be released in February. Click here to listen to the interview.
