Burlington’s trio of top CEOs held an impromptu press briefing on the steps of City Hall on Aug. 1. It wasn’t what they originally had in mind.

Mayor Miro Weinberger met for the first time with both Thomas Sullivan, the new president of the University of Vermont, and John Brumsted M.D., president of Fletcher Allen Health Care. UVM and the hospital, closely linked institutions, are among the largest employers in the state.

After introductions at Mirabelle’s, a popular breakfast spot, the three leaders strolled to City Hall Park for a brief pre-arranged meeting with a press availability billed as a photo opportunity. But several reporters had questions, particularly for Sullivan concerning student housing. All three CEOs recently began their tenures. After five minutes and a few more pictures they moved inside for a private exchange.

Correction: An alert reader pointed out that UVM and Fletcher Allen are among the state’s largest employers — not the biggest employers.
