Vermont’s minimum wage will bump up from $9.15 to $9.60 on Jan. 1.

The Vermont Legislature and Gov. Peter Shumlin approved a graduated set of increases over a three-year period, starting in 2015. The wage will go up to $10 in 2017 and $10.50 in 2018. After that, the wage rate will be indexed to inflation.

Vermont has one of the highest minimum wages in America.

Shumlin said in a statement that since the law went into effect a year ago, Vermont companies have added 3,200 new workers.

“I was proud to sign this law and I am pleased to see the minimum wage rise once again next year,” Shumlin said. “Giving a boost to hard working Vermonters is not only the right thing to do; it is also good for our economy as a whole.”

In 2014, President Barack Obama asked states to bypass Congress and raise the minimum wage. Vermont was one of the first states to do so, according to the governor’s office.
