Gov. Peter Shumlin and the Vermont Legislature are holding an education finance symposium on Tuesday, Jan. 14, at St. Michael’s College in Colchester.
The symposium will include local and national finance experts who will assess Vermont’s unique statewide property tax system. Shumlin has said he wants to make the funding mechanism “more sustainable and accountable while balancing equity, quality and local control.”
The event is being organized by Larry Picus, a consultant for the state, who recently assessed the efficacy of the state’s education financing system.
The following experts will be in attendance:
David Monk, Dean of the College of Education at Penn State
Tom Downes, Tufts University
Michael Wolkoff, University of Rochester
Daphne Kenyon, Lincoln Institute of Land Policy
Patrick Walsh, St. Michael’s College
Kieran Killeen, University of Vermont
