Darren Springer, chief counsel for Sen. Bernie Sanders, will take over as the Public Service Department’s new deputy commissioner. Chris Recchia, commissioner of the department, made the announcement on Thursday.

On March 25, Springer will step into the position that was vacated by Sarah Hofmann, who left the department after almost two decades to become the executive director of the New England Conference of Public Utility Commissioners.

Springer will come to the department from his current position as Sanders’ chief counsel and senior policy adviser on energy and the environment. Recchia said Springer’s experience made him a strong fit for the position.

“Darren’s expertise in the areas of energy and the environment will benefit us greatly as we continue to implement the policy goals defined in the Comprehensive Energy Plan,” Recchia said in a public statement.

Springer, a Vermont Law School graduate, is also a former program director of energy and transportation at the National Governors Association Center for Best Practices.
