The recount for one of St. Alban’s two House seats reaffirmed a slim victory for Democrat Mike McCarthy. Republican contender Casey Toof requested the recount after election night results showed him finishing 20 votes behind McCarthy. Toof didn’t pick up any additional votes during the recount though McCarthy ended up with five fewer votes, condensing his advantage over Toof to a mere 15 votes. According to Franklin County Clerk James Pelkey, the unofficial final vote count shows McCarthy with 1,419 and Toof with 1,399.
Pelkey is in the middle of administering another recount — this one a contest between Democrat Don Collins and Republican Dustin Degree for a Franklin County Senate seat — that he expects to complete by the end of the day on Tuesday.
The third pending outcome in Vermont’s elections— a race for an Orleans House seat between incumbent Republican Mark Higley and Progressive/Democrat Katherine Sims — is due on Wednesday.
