  1. Really interesting pair of articles – thank you!

Last year we got a series of polling calls (purporting to be) from the VT Department of Health asking to speak to an adult in the household – and then, when I answered, stating that they needed to speak to the man of the house. They must have called 6-8 times trying to speak to my husband. Huge waste of resources.

  2. Here is a BIG problem with telephone polls that ought to be addressed. Every poll I’ve participated in was a call to my published landline telephone number.

Now, millions of people have abandoned landline phones in favor of wireless phones for which there is no published directory . Many may have done so for economic or other reasons.

I believe a built-in demographic bias may exist in polls in that people with only wireless phones are not in the polling sample. These folks may represent a different viewpoint on a topic that is missed if they are never polled.

  3. Polling calls are as unsolicited as telemarketing calls are and they should be regulated as well.

Personally, I’ve lost faith in these polls so I consider getting such calls a nuisance. And whenever I get one, I report the phone number at http://www.callercenter.com. These politicians wanted publicity, then it’s publicity I gave them. Just that, it was negative.

  4. Phone scams or any other kinds, I think everybody should check Scam Detector, an app that Apple released recently. They have hundreds and hundreds of scams exposed, in several industries. For those interested, the app has an online presence as well: http://www.scam-detector.com

VTD requires that all commenters identify themselves by first and last name. You may wonder why we don't accept anonymous comments. The short answer is: We want to keep the discourse civil.

You might rightly ask, since most online newspapers accept anonymous posts from readers, what makes VTD so special?

The long answer is: Anonymous comments don't support our mission. We are a nonprofit news organization dedicated to enhancing democracy through in-depth journalism.
