  1. Lt Governor Scott is not only right, but very articulate on the perennial subject of Vermont’s need to join the rest of the country and inaugurate the four-year term. Sen. Doyle has fought this battle valiantly for years. It is long overdue and, if nothing less, we can take a lesson from the 24/7 campaign antics nationally. Vermonters need to allow our elected leaders time to govern. I, too, respect Frank Bryan’s rationale, but now believe that the accelerating campaign time frame and related antics warrant a longer term of actually governing. The old “term limits” and “throw the bastard out” arguments were always little more than efforts to legislate malaise.

  2. A four year term won’t reduce the amount of money spent on campaigns.

Instead of $2.5 million every 2 years, it will be $5 million every four years.

Politicians will just have more time between elections to raise money.

With a longer term comes more power. With more power comes more campaign money. If anything, a four year term will just increase the amount of money spent on gubernatorial elections.

  3. I’ve been thinking about this oped and have the following comments:

    1) Yeah, I know democracy sucks for those in power, but too bad.

    2) Instead of pushing for a longer term state funded job, the Lt. Guv should be pushing to return Vermont’s Lt. Guv position to a part time position with part time salary.

    3) I really agree with Mike Curtis above.

  4. Phil Scott says we spend too much time and money because of the two year term. By this reasoning couldn’t we spend even less if we had a 10 year term or almost nothing if the governor were elected for life? Then a governor would never be “distracted” by pesky electioneering, fund raising, possibly facing up to unpopular decisions. But what looks like “distractions” to the Phil Scott looks like accountability to me.

The four year term would only encourage behavior like in Wisconsin where Gov Walker dropped his moderate mask immediately after the election no doubt hoping the citizenry would have forgotten by the time his 4 year term was up. In that case, a recall election has been petitioned, obviously a far greater “distraction” to all concerned than a contested re-election campaign.

Nor would a 4 year term prevent election campaigning from being lengthy and trivial: just look at the idiocy of our Presidential elections. It’s up to candidates to limit the length of campaigns and, crucially, their seriousness.

Accountability—the “principal / agent dilemma”—is the Achilles heel of representative democracy and short terms of office reduce its dangers. Our governors need to face us, their principals, as often as possible. We should cling to the two year term with all our might.
