  1. Fly ash is also considered a “green” additive to concrete. It replaces some of the portland cement that needs to be mined and diverts the fly ash from waste facilities. The fly ash also strengthens the concrete and improves the workability. I have also know people who have not wanted to use it because of the toxic chemicals it contains. There is naturally a wikipedia page on this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fly_ash

This serves as a reminder that “green” products typically have some properties that are undesirable. For this reason it is important to determine your primary sustainability goals prior to beginning the design of a green building. Otherwise their is no criteria to measure trade-offs.

  2. It is important to put things in perspective to minimize emotional hysterics.

Coal plants have bottom ash and flyash emissions that are toxic, contain heavy metals and spread radioactivity over large areas that harm the fauna and flora and cause various illnesses and tens of thousands of deaths each year.

The 40-50 year life cycle radioactivity emitted by a coal plant is many orders of magnitude greater than from a similar size nuclear plant.

One above-ground nuclear test releases more radioactivity than the combined emissions of all nuclear plants, including Three-Mile-Island and Chernobyl, during the past 50 years. There have been over 2,000 above-ground nuclear tests.

Comment policy

VTD requires that all commenters identify themselves by first and last name. You may wonder why we don't accept anonymous comments. The short answer is: We want to keep the discourse civil.

You might rightly ask, since most online newspapers accept anonymous posts from readers, what makes VTD so special?

The long answer is: Anonymous comments don't support our mission. We are a nonprofit news organization dedicated to enhancing democracy through in-depth journalism. Our role is to foster a civil online discourse, and one very simple and effective way to do that is to require commenters to identify themselves. This isn't a new idea, of course. This is the way newspapers have treated letters to the editor since time immemorial.

As a result of our comment policy, VTD has created a safe zone for readers who want to engage in a thoughtful discussion on a range of subjects. We hope you join the conversation.
