  1. There is only good to come from this contested election… Brian Dubie has been largely silent while the Democratic Candidates outlined and refined their arguments over the course of the forums/debates. Now they are on hold while we check out our election system to see if it works any better than it did in the 2006 election when so many errors were made at the local level in reporting the totals. If there were lots of errors, then the local BCAs and the town clerks of towns which have made substantial errors in both the 2006 election and in this 2010 election, should be found out. They signed the tally sheets.
If there are no substantial differences in the recount totals, then we will have verified our electoral system, and come to a firm conclusion as to which candidate really got the majority of the votes.
Meanwhile, Brian Dubie will be, for the first time, revealing in detail what his agenda is for the state. The Democratic winner will have had time to hear these plans and will have the down time to write guidance to the voters, telling them what is wrong with Brian Dubie ever becoming Governor, and what this Democratic Governor will do which is so much more effective and of more benefit to us here in the state of Vermont in recovering from the Douglas/Bush policies of the past 8 or so years. This pause to consider is a good thing for Democrats and for Vermont. We have to take the time to do it right.

    1. Timothy I hadn’t thought of the recount giving the Democratic candidates time to examine Dubie’s plans, but I agree. Plus in two weeks Brian Dubie still won’t have any record to run on. I think a lot of voters do care about the issues though. I would not guess what percentage of voters choose based on how much they ‘like’ someone and not the things that matter like how well they will govern. What is clear is that Dubie is already promising more of the same ideology and failed policies that George Bush and Jim Douglas followed for the past eight years.

VTD requires that all commenters identify themselves by first and last name. You may wonder why we don't accept anonymous comments. The short answer is: We want to keep the discourse civil.

You might rightly ask, since most online newspapers accept anonymous posts from readers, what makes VTD so special?

The long answer is: Anonymous comments don't support our mission. We are a nonprofit news organization dedicated to enhancing democracy through in-depth journalism. Our role is to foster a civil online discourse, and one very simple and effective way to do that is to require commenters to identify themselves. This isn't a new idea, of course. This is the way newspapers have treated letters to the editor since time immemorial.

As a result of our comment policy, VTD has created a safe zone for readers who want to engage in a thoughtful discussion on a range of subjects. We hope you join the conversation.
