Now, wait, the state is laying off hundreds and this human services guy wants to use the new stimulus money for facility maintenance to probably remodel the executive offices? If so, they are always looking out for themselves first, even in a recession.

the governor wants the jobs bill but his administration provides misleading data to the committees about the return on investment from the programs he wants funded

Tourism & Marketing told the Senate Economic Development Comm. that every dollar spent results in $4.48 in return; this turns out to be a complete fabrication (the legislature’s economist called it “preposterous”)

The VT Training Program also made some questionable claims; when asked to collect the data necessary to track it over time, the administration said it was too burdensome

the methodology used by VEDA to estimate the cost of each job created is flawed

this is the same governor touting Challenges for Change, which is based on the premise that policies and funding will be evidence based; it’s all a joke and he has the nerve to say the legislature is dragging its feet as it asks the very questions responsible policy makers are supposed to ask

VTD requires that all commenters identify themselves by first and last name. You may wonder why we don’t accept anonymous comments. The short answer is: We want to keep the discourse civil.

You might rightly ask, since most online newspapers accept anonymous posts from readers, what makes VTD so special?

The long answer is: Anonymous comments don’t support our mission. We are a nonprofit news organization dedicated to enhancing democracy through in-depth journalism. Our role is to foster a civil online discourse, and one very simple and effective way to do that is to require commenters to identify themselves. This isn’t a new idea, of course. This is the way newspapers have treated letters to the editor since time immemorial.

As a result of our comment policy, VTD has created a safe zone for readers who want to engage in a thoughtful discussion on a range of subjects. We hope you join the conversation.
