Bear Savage, Environmental Reporter & UVM Mentor

Bear Savage covers the environment for VTDigger and is a mentor for the Community News Service at the University of Vermont.

Bear grew up in New England, and they’re returning to Vermont from Chicago. They studied at the University of Vermont and at Northwestern University’s Medill Graduate School of Journalism. They worked with Northern Public Radio in Illinois as a Report for America corps member reporting on agriculture and the environment. They also contributed reporting to the Mississippi River Basin Ag & Water Desk and Harvest Public Media. They were a Pulitzer Center Reporting Fellow in 2024. They got their start in journalism at UVM’s Headwaters Magazine as an undergraduate. They’re excited to return to a more mountainous landscape, although the biking they loved in the flat Midwest won’t be quite so easy anymore!
