[A] mother and son who were last seen near Somerset Reservoir Saturday afternoon and who were the subjects of a large search were found early Sunday evening by two hikers, according to a state police press release.
Vermont State Police said late Sunday night that Allison Passage, 29, and her son James Lake, 11, both of Bennington, who were seen near the southern Vermont reservoir at around 3:30 p.m. on Saturday afternoon, appeared to be unharmed.
The hikers who found the pair called the police and waited with them until rescue crews arrived, police said.
The two were escorted out of the woods at about 10:15 p.m., emerging near Vermont Route 9. At the time of the press release, they were being evaluated by Deerfield Valley Rescue.
Helping in the search were the state police Field Force and Criminal divisions, the VSP Search and Rescue Team, Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department, New England K-9 Search and Rescue, Upper Valley Wilderness Response Team, Rescue Inc., Wilmington Fire/Rescue and the Bennington Police Department.
Police had said in a statement Sunday that “foul play” was not suspected, however “there are concerns for their welfare.”
“They are not avid hikers and are unfamiliar with the area,” police said in a release.
