[T]uesday’s general election delivered mixed results for Vermont’s major political parties: while Republican Gov. Phil Scott defeated his Democratic challenger, a down-ballot blue wave will send a veto-proof majority of Democrats and Progressives to the House next year.
Scott told the crowd at the GOP’s election night headquarters that the vote for a divided government sent a message to both his administration and the Legislature: “Work together.”
But at the Democrats’ gathering, House Speaker Mitzi Johnson described the House shift as a direct response to Scott’s actions in the last legislative session.
“You all know the record number of vetoes that happened,” Johnson said, referring to the 11 bills Scott rejected. “Tonight, Vermonters said that’s not what we want.”
