[D]ear Readers:
Thanks to your generosity, we have raised $161,430 for our annual fund drive so far. We are grateful to the 1,000-plus readers who have made a commitment to support VTDigger.
But we still have $187,275 to raise before Dec. 31. We need your help to keep VTDigger strong.
Many of you now rely on the Washington, D.C., news we bring you every day. We invested in this service during the presidential inauguration just this past January, because we know Vermonters are hungry for reporting directly from our nation’s Capitol.
VTDigger is the first Vermont news outlet to embed a reporter in D.C. We have published stories about the impact of Trump’s executive orders on immigration and the resettlement of refugees in Rutland to the big push to reform the tax code, including an analysis of who really benefits from congressional tax cuts.
Reporting from the Capitol doesn’t come cheap. We are asking you to dig deep and support our Washington, D.C., bureau so that we can continue this service.
Elizabeth Hewitt, our Washington, D.C., reporter, talks about why Vermont coverage of the Capitol is more important than ever.

Capitol Hill may seem far away from Montpelier’s Golden Dome. Decisions made in Congress, however, have profound impacts on Vermonters and state government. In the past six months we’ve seen debates in Congress on the health care system, the federal budget, and the tax system. Right now, I’m focused on following the developments on these top issues, seeing where members of Vermont’s delegation stand, and digesting what potential policy changes could mean for Vermonters.
VTDigger has a record of providing readers with comprehensive coverage of policymaking in the Legislature. This year, we expanded our scope to Washington for the first time. My job reporting on these complex issues is made easier because I have an opportunity to collaborate with my colleagues back in Vermont who are experts in their beats.
In the press corps in Washington, D.C., there is a rich tradition of journalists who work for regional news outlets that dig into what federal policymaking means for people in different parts of the country. We are proud to be the only Vermont news organization that has a full-time reporter in D.C.
