An East Montpelier man shot himself in the yard of Plainfield residence on Sunday, according to the Vermont State Police.

The police responded to a call Sunday morning about suicidal statements made by the man, but his location was unknown at the time.

At 12:45 p.m. a Plainfield resident called state police about an unknown male discharging a firearm in a neighbor’s yard.

Troopers say they found the man who appeared distraught and attempted to initiated a dialogue. He ultimately committed suicide with the firearm, police say. No one was else was harmed.

The death is under investigation by a detective at the Middlesex barracks. The name of the deceased has not been released.
