Mary Powell, CEO of Green Mountain Power, was named woman of the year at an industry trade conference this week.
Powell was selected from among three finalists for the POWER-GEN Woman of the Year award. Also nominated were Diane Drehoff, director of maintenance marketing at Siemens Energy and Colleen Layman, associate vice president and Resources Business Group Water principal for HDR Inc.
Powell was to deliver the keynote address today at the POWER-GEN International conference in Orlando, Fla.
According to a news release, the nominees were judged in three categories with the most weight being given to how they advanced the power generation industry. Judges also considered the nominees’ ability to lead and the impact they have made on their communities.
Powell, who has led GMP since 2008, said in a statement that she “grew up in a theatrical home and went to a specialized high school for the arts.” She credits much of her training in the arts with helping foster the leadership success she has found in her career.
The award was presented by PennWell Corp., which publishes power industry trade magazines.
