Dear Editor,
Amazon’s proposed distribution facility in Essex isn’t an economic win for Vermont — it’s a threat to the small businesses and workers that sustain our local economy. Amazon has a long track record of undercutting independent retailers, avoiding taxes and mistreating its workforce. We shouldn’t roll out the welcome mat for a company that prioritizes profits over people.
Across the country, Amazon has built its dominance by squeezing small businesses, exploiting tax loopholes and opposing worker organizing. Its warehouses are notorious for unsafe conditions, high injury rates and retaliatory tactics against employees fighting for basic rights. Vermont prides itself on strong labor protections and a thriving small business community — Amazon’s model runs counter to both.
This isn’t just about adding a warehouse. It’s about giving more power to a corporation that drives down wages, pushes out local businesses and creates grueling, high-turnover jobs. Instead of welcoming Amazon, we should invest in Vermont’s workforce and strengthen local businesses to build an economy that works for Vermonters — not corporate giants.
I urge community leaders to reject this proposal and stand with the small businesses and workers who truly make our economy strong.
