Strong northwesterly winds caused more than 12,000 Vermont customers to lose power Saturday morning. 

The National Weather Service’s Burlington office issued a wind advisory for much of northern and central Vermont, warning of wind gusts up to 50 miles per hour. Peak gusts were expected to take place between 6 a.m. and 8 a.m., and the advisory was expected to last until 11 a.m. 

Scattered power outages began around 1 a.m. Saturday, according to VTOutages. By 8:30 a.m., over 12,000 had lost electricity. Chittenden, Orange, Lamoille and Orleans counties had the most outages at that hour. 

The weather service urged caution while driving Saturday morning.
